haiti:
my notes on the atrocities as they were ongoing in early 2004:
- Feb. 18th: Background on the manipulation of aid to undermine the government, debt relations, US pro-opposition bias.
- Feb. 27th: Regarding direct military support for rebel leaders.
- Feb. 29th: Background regarding the disputed elections; Aristide's actual record as a "brutal authoritarian", tinpot dictator, etc.: c.f. Hugo Chavez.
- Mar. 1st: Elite liberal sanctimony.
- Mar. 2nd: The March of bullshit.
- Mar. 3rd: Keeping foreign appointments.
- Mar. 5th: Caricom denounces "dangerous precedent".
- Mar. 8th: There are no longer any democratic violations in Haiti because there is no longer any democracy.
- Mar. 21st: the gruesome toll begins to be barely assessed.
- May 29th: disputed claims regarding May 18th pro-Aristide protests.
- July 27th: textiles are booming!
- August 4th: Mass graves in Titayen reported.
- Oct. 10th: "Aristide thugs" still being blamed for ongoing violence by the State Department eight months later.
And things since then have by and large gone from bad to worse, as efforts go forward to purge Haiti of the political organization that has the support of over 80% of a desperate population. Sweet democracy!
Old habits die hard.
