"Nobody is talking about dates, and that worries us.":

They need worry no more, the US is bulldozing the date palm groves of Iraqis who won't talk. This is roughly akin to sabatoging Iraq's oil wells - which the USG may have some experience with - were one hoping for Iraqi industry to help fund reconstruction. It's also bad counter-insurgency policy to politicize the matter, forcing people to pick sides: it's even worse to do this when you're an occupying army. It's also, as a matter of course, a war crime to institute collective punishment, and it's just plain wrong to rip away civillian's livelihoods when they've done nothing more than what any American is entitled to do in expressing their own liberty: plead the 5th.
