william odom says:
[Iraq] has become an "internal war". One the United States cannot win without destroying something like 20 percent of the population and imposing a ruthless U.S.-run regime in Baghdad. [pdf]
Reminds me of the "if only the military had been free to prosecute the war we would have won in Vietnam" - true, but not something we should allow the military to persue. Responsibility to prevent genocide and all that - or in Vietnam's case a larger genocide - a war we were persuing in the interests of preventing a communist genocide, etc. Note that Odom is a mere expert authority on the implications of that policy, not an advocate.
So this here US General says we have to kill 5 million Iraqis to "win" - a fine genocide it would be - as well as impose a draft and accept far higher casualty rates. Odom, who's been advocating withdrawal for the better part of the war, doesn't think it's worth it and says we should get out now, and I agree with Max when he says that "the logical implication is that the administration of G.W.Bush is a mortal threat to U.S. Imperialism". This is, of course, also true of Kerry until such a time as he sees fit to take it upon himself to find a way for us to lose a war we've already lost.
Anyway, I just thought this was a credible authority to cite with regard to the fact that anybody who promotes the aforementioned argument regarding Vietnam about Iraq is fucking inhuman, sociopathic Nazi scum, and in dire need of serious mental treatment.
