a different course, of course!:
Secretary of State Condileeza Rice, June 20th, 2005:
We should all look to a future when every government respects the will of its citizens -- because the ideal of democracy is universal. For 60 years, my country, the United States, pursued stability at the expense of democracy in this region here in the Middle East -- and we achieved neither. Now, we are taking a different course. We are supporting the democratic aspirations of all people.
As President Bush said in his Second Inaugural Address: "America will not impose our style of government on the unwilling. Our goal instead is to help others find their own voice, to attain their own freedom, and to make their own way."
July 31st, 2007:
an arms package valued at possibly more than $20 billion for Saudi Arabia and five other Persian Gulf nations that Bush will ask Congress to approve, according to the Defense Department. Included in the package are advanced satellite-guided bombs, fighter-aircraft upgrades and new naval vessels. The U.S. is also negotiating 10- year military aid agreements with Egypt and Israel that may total $43 billion, renewing aid deals that expire this year with both countries.
"This effort will help bolster forces of moderation and support a broader strategy to counter the negative influences of al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, Syria and Iran," Rice said in a statement.
