"no one can say with any certainty what constitutes a dangerous level of warming":
the Pentagon has apparently given the President a verdict on some resent research:
A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world.
I've made an html version of the entire document available: Abrupt Climate Change Scenario and Its Implications for United States National Security, minus the fancy graphics. For those still tossing their dice on the more optimistic scientists (have fun parsing "simple picture of the greenhouse mechanism is seriously oversimplified"):
"Rather than decades or even centuries of gradual warming, recent evidence suggests
the possibility that a more dire climate scenario may actually be unfolding. This is
why GBN is working with OSD to develop a plausible scenario for abrupt climate
change that can be used to explore implications for food supply, health and disease,
commerce and trade, and their consequences for national security. ...
Ocean, land, and atmosphere scientists at some of the world's most prestigious organizations have uncovered new evidence over the past decade suggesting that the plausibility of severe and rapid climate change is higher than most of the scientific community and perhaps all of the political community is prepared for. "
Sounds like a mild and sunny bet to me, why worry? Meantime there may be no more oil to burn when it comes to generating greenhouse gases, according to one Bush administration energy advisor. After we hit peak oil greener fuels provide better pastures for fun and profit, so expect a mere decade of intermittent chaos and nuclear holocaust.
Have a nice day.
