oh yeah, and give me 50 beeellion dollars:
I have a real hard time believing this table:
Exhibit 2: Distribution of Federal Fiscal Subsidies to Energy, 2006
Preliminary Estimates
|
| $ Billions Per Year (Avg. of High/Low Ests) | % Share
|
Oil and Gas | 39 | 52.4% |
Coal | 8 | 10.5% |
Fossil, mixed | 2 | 3.3% |
|
Total Fossil | 49 | 66.2% |
|
Nuclear | 9 | 12.4% |
Ethanol | 6 | 7.6% |
Other Renewables | 6 | 7.5% |
Conservation | 2 | 2.1% |
Mixed Resources/Other | 3 | 4.2% |
|
Total, all resources | 74 | 100.0% |
But apparently there's some truth to it. 50 billion is about 6% of the 2006 budget, or over 300 bucks per taxpayer. Chump change compared to the bill for controlling the worlds energy supplies, but still. If we were spending 50 billion on incentives for, say, solar every year instead of fossil fuels, we'd be exporting energy within a few decades.
You know what this means don't you? It means I've been filling up the gas tanks of all these rugged individualists in their gas guzzling hulks who've spent the past decade acting offended over smug liberal fascists trying to tell them what to drive to work. I begin to see the deadly temptation.
