The Senate Democratic Leadership today demanded Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki clarify his position with regard to Hezbollah's aggression against Israel.
"Your statements are very troubling. Your failure to condemn Hezbollah's aggression and recognize Israel's right to defend itself raise serious questions about whether Iraq under your leadership can play a constructive role in resolving the current crisis and bringing stability to the Middle East."
Defense? Aggression? They mean, I suppose, something like:
[July 12th] Israel sent a commando force into southern Lebanon and was subsequently attacked by Hezbollah near the village of Aitaa al-Chaab, well inside Lebanon's southern territory. It was at this point that an Israel tank was struck by Hezbollah fighters, which resulted in the capture of two Israeli soldiers and the death of six.
Which is at least as believable as the kidnapping storyline: if "a senior Israeli army officer began giving PowerPoint presentations, on an off-the-record basis, to U.S. and other diplomats, journalists and think tanks, setting out the plan for the current operation in revealing detail" over a year ago then this is, as in 1982, just a case of Israel shopping a war to Washington for a green light. Washington's green light - were there any doubt that the attack was thoroughly approved - was followed by sped up shipments of jet fuel, then bombs, and maybe intelligence cooperation, nevermind blocking efforts to bring about a ceasefire. The "kidnapping" was nothing more than a flimsy pretext (in 2004 under the same circumstances - except the warplan wasn't ready - Israel sufficiently defended itself by merely arranging the prisoner exchange) for a continuation of the naked aggression of 1982, if not, it seems, an outright fabrication altogether.
