the coca kingpin:
Evo Morales apparently won the presidential election in Bolivia: so far as what Americans will hear or care about it he reportedly promised to continue fighting narco trafficking and narco production, but to continue selling 100 plus annual tons of the crop to Coca-Cola Corp. Presumably a move on his part to end violent and ineffective coca erradication programs will be recieved with widespread panic in this country, I think well encapsulated by the false assumptions of such questions from our press corps as "Any concern about the fact that Evo Morales has effectively launched to legalize the cocaine industry?"
So now John Kerry is going to have to strut up to a podium somewhere and caw about how Elo is a narco-trafficking warlord, or some such, like the US-supported President of Columbia actually was, and might as well be. I don't know much else about Morales, and Morales doesn't appear to know what he plans to do yet, so I guess we wait around for the USG to try bogarting the guy. That ought to help clarify his positions.
update: Michael Lettieri's recent articles
on the subject are fairly informative.
update 12/23: Daniel Drezner has some interesting comments, as do his commentors. Narcotrafficking fanatics the lot of them! I remind myself to read him more often, forgetting why I neglected to. Substancewise: "we" need not concern ourselves with Morales as he has not yet demonstrated any competence. Yes. But in the meantime wackawackawawawaaaaa.
