I vaguely remember wanting to note something about stories like this: the master narrative in the press about recent tortilla riots in Mexico has been all about rising demand for ethanol. But as US corn growers like to argue ethanol is made out of yellow corn, which is used as livestock feed in Mexico and tortillas are made out of white corn. There's ostensibly two prices, linked by the fact that the production of one displaces the other.
