typical:
I'll often read things like:
Yet no evidence existed at the time - and none has materialized since - to substantiate the charge that My Lai was typical. Nor is it likely, given the number of antiwar journalists reporting on Vietnam, that if other atrocities had occurred, they could have been kept secret.
And think about how openly it seems such crimes were committed, since My Lai as initially reported by Hersch was reported as a massive, months-long campaign of terror in which one day a particular incident reached such gruesome levels that it finally offended some peoples' sense of moral conscience enough to eventually, haphazardly, result in something more than a coverup. Turns out that was the only thing atypical about it. The months-long campaign of terror, taking place as a friendly competition between Charlie and Bravo companies, on the other hand barely merited reaction. It's easy to prevent crime by legalizing criminal behavior, so they say.
Anyway, more new news on this front: "Declassified papers show U.S. atrocities went far beyond My Lai." So in fact the US military started considering these things crimes worthy of investigation and substantiated the charges, and didn't have the moral fortitude to do anything to prevent it from continuing along as it had, by failing to prosecute more than a handful of those involved, and failing further to sentence more than a slap on the wrist. And then, just as typically, it covered the atrocities up.
