abc was warned about alexis debat five years ago:
AFP news agency, September 6, 2002, "French ministry denies source named in US TV terror report is ex-official"
Alexis Debat, presented by the American [TV] channel ABC as "a former official at the French Defence Ministry" in the context of the case of [Zacarias] Moussaoui [charged in the USA in connection with the 11 September attacks], "has never belonged" to this ministry, it was learnt on Friday from an official source in Paris."He says he has worked at the Defence Ministry, but he has never belonged..."
For a little while after that, at least, he was referred to as "historian Alexis Debat", before re-assuming the identity of ex-MoD senior officer Alex Debat.
Rue 98 said
the French government confirmed he had a "desk job for a few months", which, in his biography at the George Washington University Homeland Security Institute becomes "senior desk officer for the Ministry of Defense", and ABC News still refers to him as "desk officer in the French Ministry of Defense". It must not take long to become a "senior" "officer" for the French MoD. They probably fill those positions through temp agencies.
Background here and wikipedia.
