Militia of the Union of the Islamic Court (UIC) on Wednesday captured the strategic town of Jowhar, the last stronghold of an alliance of faction leaders, without a shot being fired inside the town, local sources told IRIN.
The remaining "alliance" leaders are apparently defecting to the UIC, and so it goes.
Meanwhile in the transition government:
[Somali Transitional Federal Government] Speaker Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden said that 198 members voted in favor of a plan by President Abdullahi Yusuf's government to bring in peacekeepers from Uganda and Sudan.
Huh? Sudan? You mean the Sudan that's in the middle of committing genocide against black Muslims? The one we're so friendly with? Or is that some other Sudan? Brilliant.
East African states have agreed to isolate leaders of armed factions in Somalia by imposing a regional travel ban on them and freezing their assets in a bid to help the nation's fledgling transitional federal government restore stability.
The TFG, up until a week ago, had four of said warlords in its cabinet, and fired the lot of them for breaking a ceasefire signed in Kenya. The idea of it "restoring" anything is pretty brittle.
Here's a more complete background on the Islamic Courts Union.
